Reply Zombiac3 December 5, 2017 Because it’s EAs fault these studios needed to be boiught out because they were failing or they sold out to EA for millions Reply ThreeTwoFlu December 5, 2017 [Dark Age of Camelot is still online.](http://darkageofcamelot.com/) Reply 0x2F40 December 5, 2017 I understand the anger at EA for shutting down studios. I’m still pretty sad/mad about the recent Visceral closure. Yet you don’t have to lie to make them look bad, this picture is wrong and unfair at times. * Maxis didn’t die in 2004, in fact most of these studios death dates are made up based on your own feelings of when you started to dislike the games being produced. * Criterion isn’t dead * Bioware and Dice aren’t dead. And they certainly did NOT die in 2007 and 2004 * Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins are both some of of Bioware’s best games and that’s post EA acquisition. * Dice has a few of it’s best titles post 2004 EA acquisition * THIS PHOTO uses Mirrors Edge as a defining game of Dice and that was released in 2008…. 4 fucking years post EA acquisition. * Lucas Arts death wasn’t even EA, Disney killed off Lucas Arts. * The SWTOR game came out a few years before Disney acquired (and shut down) Lucas Arts. Since its an MMO it was also worked on for YEARS prior. * The lore in SWTOR also isn’t shit… the story is the only part most Star Wars fans enjoy. It sucks that KOTOR 3 wasn’t made but that doesn’t mean that SWTOR story is bad. * EA also did **not** cancel 1313, it was shut down by Disney when they stopped all projects and closed Lucas Arts. There’s probably other stuff I missed aswell. Reply murdoc_k December 5, 2017 spore was good tho Reply SwineHerald December 5, 2017 EA didn’t kill Lucasarts. Lucasarts killed Lucasarts. The internal Lucasarts studio had *one* decent game during the last generation that wasn’t a remake of Monkey Island. In terms of licensed games, in the 5 years leading up the put out such winners as Star Wars Angry Birds, Star Wars Tiny Tower (Tiny Death Star) Star Wars Kinect and that long awaited sequel everyone was begging for.. Star Wars Angry Birds 2. Oh but hey they had this one game in development for XB1 and PS4 that was going to be so great. I mean it’s not like the internal studio had basically been languishing in obscurity for most of the past decade. It *looked good in trailers* so that’s all that matters for a game right? I mean that’s why we all love EAs Battlefront 2, it had some really really good trailers. I was really happy with how that game turned out because the trailers were **so good.** Oh wait, I’m sorry. I forgot something. There was actually one more licenced game that came out in the half decade before LucasArts killed itself. It was called “The Old Republic” and strangely it appears to have been made by Bioware.. no this can’t be right.. Four years after this stupid meme claims Bioware was “killed.” Oh and it was published by EA, because you know.. of course it was. Stop jerking yourself off to nostalgia over games that never released. Stop pretending that there wasn’t a generation long gap between when Lucasarts died and when they actually made or even licensed good games. Reply Juicy_Brucesky December 5, 2017 We fucking know. Reply Rainsford1104 December 5, 2017 I like how almost all these companies have made at least one game considered a masterpiece in the eyes of many. Then EA buys them out and somehow doesn’t get any better for it. EA is like, the gold standard of the example of buying out competition to get rid of them. EA has to like, fire all the people from those companies because with that much talent they SHOULD be at the top of the game industry. Reply lilmoosey December 5, 2017 Welp Respawn 🙁 Reply downonthesecond December 5, 2017 Where are all the employees now though? Are they making their own companies with similar games? Did they give up? Just because a company is gone or still around doesn’t mean all their games would be great, programmers and writers come and go. Look at RARE being forced to make Kinect games. The only studios that EA are directly responsible for shutting down on this list, and are still shut down are Origin, Westwood, Bullfrog, Mythic Entertainment, Black Box, Visceral and Pandemic. Maxis is still an active, yet small, studio that is responsible for making the various Sims games, they literally just released an expansion pack for the Sims 4. Criterion Games is an active studio, DICE is an active studio (I mean really, they developed the game this subreddit loves hating right now), Bioware is still an active studio (Are we going to forget the Dragon Age series and the other Mass Effect games just for karma now?) and Lucasarts was shut down by Disney, thankfully the creator of this mess had the decency to include that point, although I have to wonder why it’s even here if EA wasn’t at all responsible for its closure. Reply the_nin_collector December 5, 2017 Boycott there ass. I have no problems. I am 99% sure they are going to fuck up the next Battlfield game. If that game has bull shit like Star Cards. I am out. Reply dswartze December 5, 2017 How about a list of all the non-EA game studios that have closed down in the same time-frame? It’s a lot. Probably much larger than the list of EA developers shut down in the same time, and many of them were pretty beloved too. Maybe game studios are just often poorly run businesses that don’t know how to survive long term, and especially can’t survive when important figures retire or leave their company. Maybe EA only shuts down so many studios because they’re so big and they also buy more studios than everyone else, and studios shutting down is just kind of what they do. Reply rockHopper54 December 5, 2017 Unrelated, but I have been searching for the name to Pinball Dreams for forever. Have remembered the theme music to that game my whole life, never could remember the game itself. I feel like a ghost who finally is at peace. Thank you! It was the game he wanted it to be, cartoony graphics and all. Not sure what EA had to do with it. You can google developers talking about how much that project was a train wreck and it had everything to do with Wright being a bad manager. The Sims was always a cash cow, from the very first game. It wasn’t “turned” into one. First of all, the game was shelved until EA bought Maxis when the company was in the brink of bankruptcy. Second, the game was specifically designed to attract casual players, particularly women (a demo not tapped into before in the industry). The Sims is the only reason Maxis still exists after Spore’s failure. EA spun The Sims off into its own studio to keep it away from Will Wright, and only brought it back under Maxis after he left the company after Spore. Gamers idolize Wright as if he was some genius god. In reality, he was to Maxis what George Lucas was to Star Wars. Great at the beginning, but ultimately bad for the franchise. My favourite one is definitely the sims 2, no idea why but that game is just awesome. I wish that I could still get it but EA won’t let me have it. Reply mispells1wordallways December 5, 2017 you mean companies that were going under that EA bought? It’s not like these were companies that were surviving on their own… you don’t sell a healthy company. Either they got greedy and went for public cash, and got bought out, or they were going under and sold to ea. I can tell you which situation applies to each one, because this bullshit narrative is just more circlejerking and lesss fact. Lets start with Maxis, because that’s the funniest example! Maxis created a widely popular game, known as the sims. The sims were immensely popular and put maxis on the map. So the released more sims games… and expansions. the problem? nothing really new was being introduced, reskinnings and minor updates were all we were offered for “sequels”. The number of “expansions” for each version was ridiculous… and unlike dlc, was billed as expansions with a higher price tag. This was not true of just the sims, but the entire sims universe… simcity, simant, etc. “sequels” rarely contained much more than better graphics and better ui, and expansions were frequent and were where the true “new content” actually existed. (no fucking seriously, compare civ 1 and 2 to simcity 1 and 2, and tell me which one is actually a sequel) The creator, one Will Wright, came up with an amazing game concept. Spore. He advertised it, he pushed it. we all wanted it. The problem? it was too big for what funding and staff he had. It literally bankrupted his company trying to overreach their scope. He had overpromised and not secured enough funding. Well sure EA swooped in and bought the company to save it from bankruptcy. They took the sims and make it a cash cow, but basically left it alone, simply changing the inordinate number of “expansions” into dlc. creating more dlc but making the price for each individual one lower, they were able to increase revenue while also increasing accessibility to specific content. They also looked at spore, and saw how little had actually been done… because Wright had over promised. Rather than throw good money after bad, they managed to take what was done and make at least a complete game, even if it was far less than what was promised. The other option was to spends years moer in development and most likely have a release that would have made no mans sky look fulfilling. Wright saw a convenient way to blame EA for the shit, and did, and gamers bought it, but anyone can rationally look at it and realize EA would not have UNDONE work already completed… so their must have been a lot less than we were promised. And that’s the story of how maxis, a shitty shitty company, somehow got turned into heroes because they were able to spin lies and misinformation about the company that literally saved their jobs. then, gamers had the ignorance to get mad at EA for firing the man who was shitting on them publicly for his own mistakes. Good riddance. He tried to scapegoat ea for bankrupting his own company. Lets not forget ea had been his publisher from the beginning of sims… their involvement wasn’t new, just the level of it increased. I could go through practically every company and give a similar story. EA is a nice scapegoat for problems in the industry, but they are just a symptom, not a cause. Only a couple of companies (one not even included in the list, popcap) have legitimate stories of being screwed. the rest are just gamer misinformation. Also mythic was still active in 2014 Ultima and wing commander from Origin have you played those games recently? Lucas Arts has nothing to do with EA, its a Disney owned subsidiary. EA has been doing this shit for so long that the fans are just as culpable for giving them money and reinforcing that their business practices are justified. In other words, EA doesn’t do this shit just for fun or to be mean. They do it because it works and you people keep buying their games and will continue to buy their games. Reply cefm December 5, 2017 For Westwood Studios, also remember: Blade Runner, Battletech: Crescent Hawks; and Eye of the Beholder. EA really screwed Westwood after buying them from Virgin. They wasted the Command & Conquer brand name on a first/3rd person shooter, and then tried to get into MMORPG (Earth & Beyond) which wasn’t the studio’s area of expertise. Basically set them up to fail and blew up their brands. Reply ShlimDiggity December 5, 2017 Cannot forget Darkness Falls: The Crusade!
